5 Bizarre Home Remedies Our Grandparents Used That Actually Work

March 25, 2019

Sometimes grandparents really do know best.

It is easy to forget that our grandparents didn’t have many of the modern “quick fixes” we now have. So they had to find creative ways to cope with the same issues we face today.

In this article, learn about eleven “grandparent-worthy” bizarre home remedies that really do work!

Remedy 1: Potato for Spider Bites

Spider bites can be painful and itchy. Some spider bites also swell up and that can be really scary.

But relief is hiding right in your pantry in the form of a simple potato.

Thinly slice a raw potato, then hold one of the raw slices over the bite and place a bandage to hold it there.

Or you can just rub it directly on the bite and let the raw juices ease the swelling, itching and pain.

Remedy 2: Eats Yams for Menopause

Yams are very tasty with brown sugar and marshmallows at Thanksgiving. But they are also a great treat all year long.

If your doctor tells you that you have entered “the change” of life, head for the produce section in your local grocery store and snap up some fresh yams. The vitamins will help your body cope with see-sawing hormones so you can feel more balanced in no time.

Remedy 3: Grow More Hair with Nettles

As people live longer, hair loss becomes more common. Some people don’t mind hair loss, but for other people they really don’t like it.

If you want to regrow your lost hair, there is nothing better for it than nettle leaves. The nettle plant is a great natural source of beta-carotene (the same healthy stuff in carrots) and minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron and phosphorus. Nettle also has lots of protein which is great for making long, strong, healthy hair.

Remedy 4: Fight Bad Breath with Celery

Chewing gum for bad breath isn’t as healthy as most people think. Gum can be high in sugar, and it can also cause gas because you swallow air when you chew it.

But celery can cure bad breath just as well without the sugar or the gas. Just de-string a chunk, pop it in your mouth and chew!

Remedy 5: Ease Ear Aches with Lemons

Have you ever had an earache? They really hurt! But now you don’t have to take time out of your day to go to the doctor.

Cut a fresh lemon in half and squeeze some juice onto the end of a Q-tip. Place it in the opening in your ear (don’t push it in too far!) for a few moments.

You should start to feel better quickly. What is the lemon’s secret? Lemon is a natural cleaner, which means it can send bacteria packing quickly. Lemon also balances your body’s pH (how acid or alkaline something is).
